Vietnam e-visa validity is the first thing to check the moment your approval arrives. One misread date can lead to a fine or trouble on your next trip. This guide shows you how to read the dates on your e-visa, what to check at entry and exit, and what to do when your e-visa is about to expire.
1. Vietnam e-visa at a glance
The Vietnam Immigration Department reviews and issues e-visas (electronic visas). For foreign travelers, it’s a fast, convenient way to get a visa, because you apply fully online.
Official application portal: evisa.gov.vn
- Government fee: 25 USD for a single-entry e-visa and 50 USD for a multiple-entry e-visa.
- Who can apply: foreign nationals who are outside Vietnam at the time of application.
- One person per e-visa: every traveler needs an individual e-visa.
- Official processing time: usually 3–5 working days, not counting Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. In peak season, it can take 7–10 days.
Quick tip: check whether you can submit an arrival declaration at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn about 72 hours before you land. It can save you time at the airport.
Do you need an e-visa at all? Citizens of some countries can enter Vietnam without a visa, though the allowed stay varies by country. Check the Vietnam visa exemption list for 2026 to see whether your passport qualifies.

2. How long is a Vietnam e-visa valid?
A Vietnam e-visa is valid for up to 90 days. However, your actual validity can be shorter, so always check the dates printed on your own e-visa.
How to read the validity dates on your e-visa
Find the line that says “Good for entry from … until …” (in Vietnamese: Thị thực có giá trị từ ngày … đến …). These two dates show exactly when you may enter and stay in Vietnam:
- Start date: you can enter Vietnam on your e-visa from this day.
- End date: you must leave Vietnam on or before this day.
Since the dates are printed clearly, take a screenshot and save your e-visa on your phone. A quick check helps you avoid overstaying, fines, and problems on future entries.
Example: a 90-day, single-entry e-visa is valid from May 12, 2026 to August 9, 2026 (the e-visa itself shows dates as day/month/year, so 12/05/2026 to 09/08/2026).
- Start date: May 12, 2026
- End date: August 9, 2026
Single-entry vs. multiple-entry e-visa: what is the difference?
Both types are valid for up to 90 days. The difference lies in how many times you can enter. A single-entry e-visa lets you enter Vietnam once, while a multiple-entry e-visa lets you come and go as often as you like within the validity period. If your plans include a side trip to Laos, Cambodia, or Thailand before you return to Vietnam, a multiple-entry e-visa is worth considering.
3. What to check when entering and leaving Vietnam
- Personal details: your name, passport number, and date of birth on the e-visa must match your passport exactly.
- Printed copy: carry a printout even if you have the e-visa on your phone. It’s a handy backup if your signal drops or your phone dies.
- Entry window: you can’t enter before the start date or after the end date shown on your e-visa.
- Exit deadline: the last day of your e-visa is also your deadline to leave Vietnam.
- Passport: make sure it stays valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry date and has at least 2 blank pages.
4. What to do when your Vietnam e-visa expires
To come back after your old e-visa expires, apply for a new Vietnam e-visa through the official portal of the Vietnam Immigration Department. If you are in a hurry, a trusted e-visa service can get your result faster.

A common mistake: some travelers apply for a new e-visa while still in Vietnam and assume they can stay longer. That doesn’t work. The portal only accepts applications from people outside Vietnam, and overstaying can quickly lead to a fine.
Instead, leave Vietnam before your old e-visa expires, then re-enter with your new e-visa within its validity dates.

7. Vietnam e-visa validity FAQs
Validity & Duration
Up to 90 days, whether you hold a single-entry or multiple-entry e-visa. Your exact validity appears on the e-visa itself, on the line “Good for entry from … until …”.
Leave on or before the last date printed on your e-visa. Add that date to your phone calendar so it never slips your mind.
Rules & Entry Conditions
A single-entry e-visa allows one entry and carries a 25 USD government fee. A multiple-entry e-visa allows several entries during its validity period and carries a 50 USD government fee.
No. Each e-visa covers one person, so every family member or group member needs their own.
Keep it valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned entry date, with at least 2 blank pages. Rules can change, so confirm with your airline before you fly.
Processing & Troubleshooting
On the official portal, processing usually takes 3–5 working days and can run longer in peak season. Our standard package takes 7–10 working days. If you’re in a hurry, choose an urgent package that delivers in as little as 1 hour or up to 3 days.
Overstaying can lead to an administrative fine and cause problems on future entries. If your e-visa is about to expire, leave on time or contact the immigration authorities for guidance before the end date.
Leave Vietnam, apply for a new e-visa while you are outside the country, then re-enter within the new e-visa’s validity dates. You can’t apply for a new e-visa on the official portal while you are inside Vietnam.
